An 80-year-old woman died this Tuesday at noon while bathing in Platja Llarga in Salou, a town located in the province of Tarragona.
As explained by Civil Protection in a statement, the 112 telephone number received a notice at 3:22 p.m. from the beach lifeguard service, indicating that a woman had been taken out of the water and that she was unconscious.
Subsequently, the same rescuers have performed resuscitation maneuvers until the arrival of the Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM), which has transferred three units. Once at the scene, SEM personnel have continued with the resuscitation maneuvers, without success.
Members of the Mossos d’Esquadra and the Civil Guard have also traveled to the area and according to the statement, at the time of the events there was a lifeguard service and the green flag was waving on the beach.
This Tuesday is the eleventh fatality in the summer campaign period (from June 15 to September 15) on Catalan beaches.
For this reason, Civil Protection calls for extreme precautions on beaches, swimming pools and inland waters coinciding with an episode of very high temperatures.
