Amritsar Lok Sabha Election 2024: BJP’s Taranjit Singh Leading in Early Trends
Amritsar, a historically and politically significant constituency in Punjab, is currently witnessing a fierce battle for the Lok Sabha seat. The Congress party has held dominance in this area, winning 12 times since independence. However, in the ongoing election, former allies BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) are making a strong bid to capture the seat from Congress’s incumbent MP Gurjeet Aujla.
BJP has placed its confidence in Taranjit Singh Sandhu, a former envoy to the US, while the Akali Dal has fielded Anil Joshi as their candidate. This election marks the first time the Akali Dal is contesting independently in Amritsar, as the seat historically belonged to the BJP when the two parties were in alliance.
In the previous Lok Sabha election in 2019, Congress’s Gurjeet Singh Aujla emerged victorious with 4,45,032 votes, defeating BJP candidate Hardeep Singh Puri. The voter turnout stood at 56.34 percent. Similarly, in 2014, Congress leader Amarinder Singh secured the seat by defeating BJP’s Arun Jaitley.
The 2024 Lok Sabha election in Amritsar took place on June 1 during Phase 7 of the polling. The constituency comprises nine assembly segments, with key contenders including Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal from AAP, Taranjit Singh Sandhu representing BJP, and Gurjeet Singh Aujla from Congress.
According to the Election Commission of India, the total number of electors in the Amritsar constituency was 15,07,875 in 2019. The demographic composition of the district reveals a majority Sikh population at 68.94 percent, followed by Hindus, Christians, and Muslims.
The political landscape in Amritsar remains dynamic and influential, reflecting the region’s rich historical significance and strategic importance in Punjab’s political realm. As the election results unfold, all eyes are on the evolving trends and the potential shift in power dynamics in this crucial constituency.
