In the middle of next week, if the forecasts come true, “we could be facing a really abnormal situation” with temperatures of more than 30 degrees in points of the east and south of the peninsula, as well as in the Canary Islands, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet ).
In a thread on its Twitter account, Aemet has pointed out this possibility and adds that these temperatures are “very inappropriate for the end of March”, with daytime values ??between 10 and 15 degrees above the normal average in large areas of the country on Wednesday 29. and Thursday the 30th. In most of the country they would be maximum temperatures “located above the 95th percentile, that is, they will be among the 5% of the warmest recorded for these dates.”
The Extreme Prediction Index (EFI) also reflects this situation and using it to analyze the average temperature (average of maximum and minimum) forecast between Tuesday 28 and Thursday 30, “the conclusion is reached that they will be very unusual values ??due to their warm character for the time”.
The Aemet warns that “in many cases”, they will be temperatures typical of June with “practically summery atmosphere” which, in addition, will be accompanied by few cloudy skies and little rainfall. Until the end of the month, the only significant rains are expected in Galicia, the Cantabrian Sea and the Pyrenees.
Thus, a “very dry” first quarter of 2023 will be completed. In much of the center, east and south of the Peninsula “we will close it with accumulated rainfall of less than half its normal average, and even less than a quarter in eastern and southern areas,” writes Aemet.
This hot and dry environment – he warns – results in a risk of fires that, despite still being a long way from summer, “already reaches very high or extreme values ??in certain areas of the country.”
