Sumar has initiated the procedures to expel his candidate for the Senate for Álava, Aitor Abecia, after learning that this Tuesday he attended an oral hearing for a crime of sexist violence against his ex-partner, according to sources from the political formation confirmed to Europa Press after advance by Eldiario.es.

The same sources have explained that since they found out about this situation, they launched the resignation of the candidate. “From Sumar we strongly defend the fight against sexist violence. Zero tolerance,” they have expressed.

Sources from the Sumar electoral committee in Euskadi have confirmed to EFE that Abecia has already resigned and that now the Álava list will “run” for the Senate, which already included the candidate for mayor of Amurrio on 28-M, Leticia Jiménez , from We can; and Ester Palacio, from Ezker Anitza-IU.

The own statutes of the party led by the second vice president, Yolanda Díaz, establish an ethical code that guides, as a minimum, the automatic resignation with the opening of an oral trial in crimes of corruption, gender violence or against fundamental rights

The former mayor of Zambrana, who belongs to the independent political platform AIZ, was denounced in 2020 by his ex-partner for an alleged physical assault that would have occurred due to a conflict between the two over the custody of a daughter they have in common.

In this context, Sumar announced in the morning that Abecia, mayor of the Álava municipality for 16 years, would be the head of the Senate list for the Álava constituency, thus fulfilling the distribution of candidates agreed upon in the electoral coalition, in which Guillermo Presa , from Podemos, would be number one in Congress for the province.

For their part, those of Díaz chose the ex-regidor, an independent profile who denounced irregularities in the plot of the ‘Miguel case’, which affected the PNV.
