A 23-year-old young man from Begur (Girona) died this Wednesday by drowning in a work accident while placing one of the boat mooring buoys on Sa Riera beach.
The events occurred around 6:00 p.m. on the Sa Riera beach in Begur when one of the two young people who worked for the Sa Riera Nautical Club installing the buoy field for the summer season did not rise to the surface.
His companion, who was waiting for him on the boat, realized that something was happening because he was not getting on and asked several people who were on another boat in the area for help.
Together they were able to enter the water and remove the young man, who had been trapped in the same rope that holds the buoy five feet deep.
They took the body to the beach and Local Police officers performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers while the paramedics, the Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM), arrived, who also tried to save his life without success.
The body of the victim, Marc O.C., will be transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine (IMLC) of Girona where the forensic experts will perform the autopsy in the next few hours.
The Local Police has activated the psychological service to assist the victim’s relatives and acquaintances.
The deceased’s partner had to be taken by ambulance to the Palamós Hospital with an anxiety attack.
The Judicial Police unit of the Girona Civil Guard has taken charge of the case, and it is being investigated by the Bisbal d’Empordà Court of Investigation.
