A 48-year-old prison official was murdered this Wednesday at the hands of a prisoner at Mas d’Enric prison, in El Catllar (Tarragona). The victim is Núria L. who worked as a cook at the penitentiary center hired by the Center de Iniciatives per la Reinserció, an entity linked to the Ministry of Justice that is in charge of organizing the workshops in which the inmates participate. The perpetrator was assigned to the center’s kitchen and lived in module 6 of the prison where the most violent prisoners serve their sentences. This afternoon, for unknown reasons, she ended the life of her partner and then committed suicide.

Prison employees first found the woman’s body, lying on the floor and showing several stab wounds. Shortly after, officials found the body of the man who allegedly committed suicide after committing the crime. The Mossos d’Esquadra have opened an investigation to clarify the facts. The prison unions have regretted the events and are preparing a joint statement to denounce the violence they face daily in prisons.

The CSIF prisons union has stated in a statement that “they had already warned that an incident of this type “could occur” and that this event is “the culmination of an escalation of attacks” that prison workers have been suffering.
