A couple has died and their son is less seriously injured after the car they were traveling in fell into the sea from a cliff of about twenty meters in Calafat, in the Tarragona municipality of L’Ametlla de Mar, as reported in a statement by the Generalitat Bombers.

The fatalities are a man and a woman, both 70 years old, and the injured person is their son, 48 years old, who was found two and a half hours after the accident with symptoms of hypothermia about 330 meters from the coast and who remains admitted to the Verge de la Cinta hospital in Tortosa (Tarragona).

The dog that was traveling in the car survived the accident, and was also rescued at sea an hour after the accident.

The emergency services were alerted at 8:40 p.m. that a car traveling along the Ronda de Mar de Calafat had fallen off the cliff and was submerged in the water.

The Bombers moved 27 troops with 14 crews and two boats to the area, one from the Tortosa park (Tarragona) and another from the Special Actions Group (GRAE).

A Maritime Rescue Helimer helicopter also participated in the operation to search at night for the victims and illuminate the accident area, as well as another Red Cross boat, crews from the Mossos, Civil Guard, local police and four units of the Emergency System. Medical Emergencies (SEM).

Two firefighters accessed the sunken car and extracted a person from inside, on whom they performed resuscitation maneuvers. Finally, the EMS medical personnel certified his death.

At 9:22 p.m., the second person who had fallen into the water was located, and resuscitation maneuvers were also carried out, also unsuccessful, while he was transferred on a Red Cross boat to the port of Calafat.

In addition, the troops rescued the dog that was traveling with the family in the car alive from the water and also transferred it to that port and handed it over to the local police of L’Ametlla.

At around 11:19 p.m., the rescue teams found the driver of the car and son of the deceased couple 330 meters from the coast, who was showing symptoms of hypothermia.

Initially transferred to the port of Calafat, he was later taken to the Tortosa hospital (Tarragona), where he was admitted in a less serious condition.

The Mossos have taken charge of the investigation of this case to try to clarify the causes of the accident.
