The Civil Guard has arrested a firefighter from the Balearic Institute of Nature (Ibanat), who was currently on sick leave, for having caused at least between five and six fires in points located between Selva and Caimari (Mallorca).
According to sources close to the events, the arrest occurred this past Monday night, when they saw the man in the area causing another fire with a Benemérita drone. At that moment, he was arrested.
It should be noted that the Armed Institute had prepared a device in the area upon suspecting that there was an arsonist on the loose, since five or six small fires had recently occurred in the area.
The Balearic Institute of Nature (Ibanat) has reported that, until this Tuesday, August 15, a total of 19.44 hectares have been burned on the Islands due to fire episodes or forest fire attempts.
According to the data provided by the Ibanat this day, there have been a total of 74 fires in the Balearic Islands up to August 15, of which 50 have occurred in Mallorca, three in Menorca, 18 in Ibiza and three in Formentera.
Likewise, of the total hectares burned, 11.51 have been in Mallorca, 0.03 in Menorca, 7.89 in Ibiza and 0.01 in Formentera. By wooded area, the data from Ibanat indicate that 13.29 hectares have been burned, of which 9.84 correspond to Mallorca, 0.03 to Menorca, 3.41 to Ibiza and 0.01 to Formentera.
In contrast, in terms of treeless area burned by fires or attempts at forest fires, of the total 6.15 hectares, 1.67 have been in Mallorca and 4.48 in Ibiza.
