The circulation of trains on the Renfe Cercanías network has been affected in both directions due to the derailment of a convoy from Villalba at the entrance to the Atocha station, sources from the railway company have informed Europa Press. In the incident, three people suffered minor bruises, according to Renfe.

The departure of the convoy from the track has affected the service on Lines C1, C2, C7, C8 and C10 since shortly before 2:48 p.m. between Atocha and Recoletos in both directions. After two hours of incident, traffic has been restored on one of the roads.

A Cercanías train coming from Villalba has left the track at the entrance to Atocha, which has forced the interruption of rail traffic on the section between Atocha and Recoletos.

In this way, Cercanías travelers are being directed towards the trains that circulate through the Sol tunnel, to Nuevos Ministerios, while an alternative transport plan is being managed for the affected Medium and Long Distance services.

The incident has forced the evacuation of the 180 passengers who were on the train, among whom there are five people with minor bruises – treated at the same station by the Civil Protection forces -, of whom three have been referred to hospitals, for medical tests, all in mild condition.

Adif points out that the cause of the incident is the “departure of an axle of a Cercanías train on the Barajas T4-Villalba line when it was entering the Atocha Cercanías station through the Recoletos tunnel”, although company technicians continue with the investigation into the trigger of the accident.

Renfe has launched an alternative circulation plan. According to sources from the railway operator, the affected circulations are those that connect the Spanish capital with Alcázar de San Juan (Ciudad Real), Jaén, Almería and Extremadura.

The trains destined for Jaén or Extremadura will leave from the Chamartín station and will be routed along an alternative route – called ‘contour’ – towards the Villaverde Bajo Cercanías station, where they will stop to wait for travelers who had originated in Jaén or Extremadura. Atocha, which will travel by Cercanías to said stop in the south of Madrid.

For their part, trips originating in Jaén, Alcázar de San Juan and Extremadura will reach Aranjuez or Leganés, respectively, and there they will transfer to Cercanías trains towards Atocha, with the exception of the Alvia 194 Madrid-Extremadura, which will make its route through Recoletos and will pass through the single track of the affected section.

The incident has caused the Atocha-Recoletos tunnel to be used with restrictions, with convoys traveling only on one track.

Thus, trains between Guadalajara and Cercedilla pass every 30 minutes through the affected section and those between Príncipe Pío and Chamartín do so through Pitis and with a frequency of 15 minutes between Las Rozas and Chamartín stations. In addition, trains from the airport end in Chamartín and the Recoletos stop receives trains every half hour.

“Renfe is already working on the rerailing of the only ‘bogie’ – two pairs of wheels used by the trains -, which is expected to take place tonight, with the aim that tomorrow the service will be the usual one,” the manager indicated. railway.

The lines that use the Sol tunnel do not suffer delays, as do the Móstoles-Atocha, Fuenlabrada-Humanes, Parla-Atocha, Atocha-Alcalá de Henares and Aranjuez-Atocha sections.
