The arrival of a DANA (isolated depression at high levels) will cause a change in weather starting this Friday in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands with widespread and persistent rains, as reported by the State Meterology Agency (Aemet).
The change will take place on Friday with the arrival of an Atlantic trough that, on Saturday, will be isolated from the general circulation, forming a DANA centered in the west of the peninsula. As a consequence, during the weekend “it is probable that there will be persistent and widespread precipitation, locally accompanied by storms, in practically the entire territory, with the exception of the Canary Islands, according to the prediction of the Aemet spokesman, José Luis Camacho.
For the agency, however, there is still “high uncertainty about the areas where the most abundant rainfall occurs.”
Friday will be a transition day. A cold front will penetrate Galicia, favoring rainfall in the extreme northwest and Cantabrian coast. During the afternoon, it is likely that prefrontal storms will develop in areas of the upper Ebro and mountain areas of the eastern peninsula, which could be accompanied by occasional heavy showers.
Throughout Saturday, with the formation of the DANA centered in the west of the peninsula, the precipitations will extend from the morning to practically the entire Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, and will be accompanied by storms, less likely in the extreme southwest.
In the surroundings of the Ebro valley, and nearby areas of the northeast, the rainfall could be more intense and persistent, with larger accumulations. During Sunday, the precipitations and storms would continue in a large part of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands.
The greatest instability could move to areas of the Mediterranean, where an intense easterly wind will blow, bringing moisture from the sea and favoring abundant rainfall.
It is probable that these will be persistent again also in northeastern areas, extending to the rest of the territory in the form of showers accompanied by storms.
Throughout the weekend, due to the cloudiness and the expected rainfall, an autumnal atmosphere will predominate, with temperatures below what is usual for these dates in a good part of the Peninsula.
As of Monday, according to the Aemet, the uncertainty regarding the evolution of the DANA and, also regarding the precipitation areas, increases to a great extent. “It is possible that the unstable environment with showers will continue, although today it is difficult to pinpoint areas with precision,” Camacho admitted.
