A cyclist who was circulating on the GI-681 regional road lost his life on Tuesday when he was run over by a bus. The victim is a 58-year-old man and a resident of Piera who fell off his bike for reasons that are still being investigated, according to the Servei Català de Trànsit, and was later run over by the bus.

The events occurred at kilometer 6.5 of the road that connects Llagostera with Tossa de Mar, a mountain road with many curves and a certain unevenness that is usually frequented by numerous cycling fans, especially on Sundays and holidays.

The Mossos d’Esquadra received notice of the accident shortly before half past ten in the morning. Three police patrols, two crews from the Generalitat Fire Department, an ambulance and the Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) helicopter traveled to the place, although they could not do anything to save his life.

With this victim there are already three cyclists who have died on Catalan interurban roads so far this year. In total, 98 people have lost their lives in a traffic accident, a figure that remains slightly below last year’s records, when there were more than a hundred deaths at the end of July. Precisely last month it set off all the alarms of those responsible for Trànsit when reaching 20 deaths in a traffic accident, thus being the worst month of the year.

Almost half of the fatalities occur on weekends or holidays, according to data from police officials. The groups considered vulnerable by Trànsit are cyclists together with pedestrians and motorcyclists. The latter represent a third of the deaths in the first semester and the number of accidents has skyrocketed in the summer months. The last fatality was last Thursday on the C-55 in Manresa after a frontal collision with a car.
