A cayuco with 48 sub-Saharan immigrants arrived this morning under its own power to the south of the island of Gran Canaria. The boat approached the coast of Maspalomas, the tourist heart of this island, and from there, escorted by Salvamento MarĂtimo, it was directed to the ArguineguĂn dock, where they were disembarked. Three of the occupants were minors and two adults were taken to hospitals on the island due to their delicate state of health.

The canoe approached land from the high seas in front of the Maspalomas Dunes. A few miles from the boat, on land, the large luxury hotels in the south of Gran Canaria and the thousands of tourists who are enjoying their vacation these days contrasted with the drama of the 48 occupants of the cayuco, who are fleeing poverty and the misery of their countries seeking a better life. The contrast was shocking. Some people who enjoyed a day at sea on their boats were able to record the peculiar image and contrast of the first world with those who have nothing.

With this, there are now 258 boats arriving to the islands so far this year with a total of 14,572 immigrants, 25% more than in 2022.
