A 77-year-old woman was injured in a critical condition this morning after drowning on the Altafulla beach, in the province of Tarragona, and finally died this afternoon at the hospital where she was admitted.

The 112 emergency telephone number received the notice at 10:47 this Thursday, indicating that a woman had been taken out of the water and that she was unconscious. The lifeguards, who were just beginning their service, performed resuscitation maneuvers until the arrival of the Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM), which mobilized two units.

The woman, of Spanish nationality, has been transferred in critical condition to the Santa Tecla hospital in Tarragona, where she lost her life this afternoon.

At the time of the incident there was a lifeguard service on the beach and the green flag was flying. Instead, this afternoon the yellow flag waved for waves.

Today’s is the thirteenth fatality in the summer campaign period (from June 15 to September 15) on Catalan beaches.

Civil Protection calls for extreme precautions on beaches, swimming pools and inland waters.
