2025 Tax Season: Filing Tax Date Guide & Deadlines
The Internal Revenue Service has officially declared that the upcoming tax season is set to commence on January 27, 2025. This tax season promises to provide taxpayers with an array of new tools and features aimed at simplifying the filing process and ensuring a seamless experience for all.
Expansion of Direct File Tool
One of the most significant changes for the 2025 tax filing season is the expansion of the Direct File tool to additional states. Last year, this online filing tool was piloted in 13 states, including New York, Arizona, California, and Texas. This year, Direct File will be available in the tri-state area and several new states, offering taxpayers more accessibility and convenience in filing their returns.
New Features for Easier Filing
In addition to the expanded availability of Direct File, taxpayers can look forward to new features designed to streamline the filing process. A data import tool will be introduced, allowing individuals to automatically import data from their IRS account, similar to popular tax software. Moreover, a new chat bot will be integrated into Direct File, providing real-time assistance to taxpayers in both English and Spanish.
Enhanced Coverage for Various Tax Situations
Direct File will now cover a broader range of tax situations, including the Child and Dependent Care Credit, Premium Tax Credit, Credit for the Elderly and Disabled, Retirement Savings Contribution Credits, and Deduction claims for Health Savings Accounts. With these enhancements, more than 30 million taxpayers across 25 states are estimated to be eligible to utilize Direct File for their tax filings.
As we gear up for the official start of the tax season, taxpayers can take advantage of the IRS Free File software to get a head start on their returns. This software allows individuals to prepare and file their returns in advance, holding them until the electronic filing date of January 27. To access the free filing tools offered by eight companies, taxpayers can visit the IRS Free File page on IRS.gov.
With these updates and improvements, the 2025 tax season is shaping up to be a more user-friendly and efficient experience for taxpayers across the country. Stay informed and be prepared to make the most of these new resources when filing your taxes this year.
