Authorities in the Bronx are on the lookout for a 14-year-old person of interest in connection with a tragic shooting that claimed the life of a 16-year-old girl. The incident occurred near a school in Morrisania, where the victim, identified as Evette Jeffrey, was riding her scooter. The shooting took place on Monday around 5 p.m. at the corner of Home Street and Tinton Avenue, close to The Bronx Latin School building.
According to initial reports from law enforcement sources, the shooting erupted following an argument between two groups of teenagers near the school premises. A brawl ensued, during which a gun was allegedly passed to one of the individuals involved. Subsequently, shots were fired into the crowd, resulting in Jeffrey being struck in the head by a bullet. The young girl, who was attending Morris Academy nearby, was not part of the altercation but was unfortunately caught in the crossfire.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the harrowing scene, stating, “When the shots are fired, who we believe to be an unintended target is struck and she immediately falls to the ground with a gunshot wound to the head as the other children run away for their lives.” Despite efforts to seek cover, Jeffrey’s injuries were severe. The motive behind the shooting and the identities of those involved remain under investigation.
