The tension has become inherent to Spanish politics. And one week after the solemn opening session of the legislature, the Congress of Deputies has once again been, on the occasion of the celebration of the 45th anniversary of the Spanish Constitution, a scene of tension due to the opposing positions that motivate the renewal of the CGPJ as well as the amnesty law that will soon be debated in the chamber.

The president of the Cortes has appealed to these tensions, who has claimed “the harmony that unites us in the face of the slightest attempt to alter coexistence.” Francina Armengol recalled that in the Magna Carta “concern, contempt or confrontation are not written” and urged the deputies and senators present to “raise the banner of dialogue based on pluralism and respect for the legitimacy of the other before the challenges we face.

Paraphrasing Miquel Roca, one of the fathers of the Constitution, the president of Congress has stressed that “democracy is the only guarantee of freedom. There is no freedom outside of democracy. And outside of democracy and freedom “There is neither possible dignity nor possible progress.”

The third authority of the State, furthermore, considers it legitimate to defend the renewal of the Constitution on basic issues such as “converting the Senate into a true chamber of territorial representation or responding to the demands of the 21st century.”

Armengol has once again mentioned the social challenges that the country faces in terms of “equality, housing, public services and the environment.” And, in a personal capacity, he has demanded the “urgent reform of article 49 so that in our founding text, people with disabilities are treated accordingly and the offensive term “disabled” disappears once and for all, as demanded by the Spanish Committee of Representatives. of People with Disabilities.

There have also been mentions of the balanced distribution of wealth. The socialist leader has recalled article 31 of the Magna Carta which dictates that “everyone will contribute to the support of public expenditure in accordance with their economic capacity through a fair tax system inspired by the principles of equality and progressivity that, in no case, will have confiscatory scope”.

His references to sexist violence deserve special mention. Lamenting the 55 murders of women so far this year, the president of Congress has demanded that work be done “urgently, and with total commitment, to eliminate this gap.”
