Hollywood is that idea recycling factory where the usual thing is for each new proposal to be a little more lame, artificial and lacking in ideas than the previous one. So, if a television adaptation of Mr and Mrs Smith is announced, one automatically imagines a light action comedy where no one will be able to repeat the beauty or chemistry of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, who even fell in love during filming. But, when you see the first images of the Mr and Mrs Smith series, the only possible reaction is that your head will explode.
Mr and Mrs Smith was initially announced as a collaboration between Donald Glover, a cult author thanks to Atlanta, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who swept the awards shows with Fleabag. They were going to create it, write it and star in it. But, after seeing that it was not so easy to combine two such defined artistic mentalities, Waller-Bridge distanced herself from the project so that Glover could adapt the 2015 film with Francesca Sloane, with whom he had worked in Atlanta and who had also written on productions like Fargo or Seven Seconds.
In this version, Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are two strangers who go to work for a spy agency. It allows them to live a life of luxury in Manhattan with the identities of John and Jane Smith. They are married for work reasons and have to carry out a high-risk mission every week. Can they keep their identities secret, especially when it’s hard to keep track of the lies they tell? And what happens if, against what is best for them, they fall in love in the middle of this farce of a marriage?
The result, as the first trailer provided by Prime Video suggests, is a translation with a less commercial vocation, cruder, more adult, possibly more corrosive, with a more realistic sense of action and with a chemistry that does not depend on two such physiques. canonical like those of Jolie and Pitt.
