Jennifer Hermoso has lived a 2023 full of ups and downs, the latter being the most controversial and least deserved. The current Mexican Pachuca soccer player fulfilled a dream shared with many Spanish soccer players: becoming world champion. The triumph of the women’s soccer team against England in the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand will remain etched in her memory, as will unfortunately Luis Rubiales’ kiss without consent.
Despite everything that has been tried to say and do to tarnish her name, the player born in Madrid will be reflected as one of the key figures of the year. This is reported by the Financial Times, who has named her the second most influential woman in the world in 2023, within a list where she is accompanied by 25 other figures of the stature of Margot Robbie, Beyoncé, Coco Gauff and Ursula von der Lynden. The captain of the English team, Leah Williamson, has been in charge of choosing her.
“Playing against Jenni is a test that you expect as a professional footballer. She can do whatever she wants with the ball, as she showed this summer at the Women’s World Cup. She started in all the games, scored three goals throughout the tournament and was fundamental to the success of Spain, which won the Cup for the first time,” expressed the one who was the rival of the Madrid soccer player in the final played in Sydney. The Arsenal defense also made reference to the incident with Rubiales.
“After that victory, when the team should have been enjoying its success, Luis Rubiales, then president of the Spanish Football Federation, kissed Jenni on the lips. He has since been charged with sexual assault. He could have stopped, downplayed the incident, and dropped the case to protect himself. Instead, despite increasing media attention, she continued to do what she knew was right,” she added.
“In her pursuit of justice, she is at the service of women around the world so that this behavior and others like it do not occur again. A leader not only on the field,” concluded the Englishwoman. Beyond this recognition, Hermoso has been included in another list of equal notoriety. The Spanish woman is part of Forbes magazine’s 100 most influential women in Spain, thus adding more additions to her already busy year.
A 2023 that will end with presenting the chimes on La 1 de Televisión Española, accompanied by the incombustible Ramón García and the singer Ana Mena. There, Hermoso will be a special guest and will have competition, specifically on Canal Sur. Her teammate and Real Madrid player, Olga Carmona, will be in charge of welcoming 2024 from Jerez de la Frontera. She will do it together with the comedian Manu Sánchez, both of whom are from Seville.
