The Cupra tribe grows with a new addition. This is the Spanish film director and producer Juan Antonio Bayona, who becomes the brand’s global ambassador to promote creativity and innovation ‘made in Barcelona’. The signing of the successful filmmaker, known internationally, was announced at an event held at Casa Seat, located in the center of Barcelona. As part of this collaboration, the Spanish firm has delivered a Cupra Formentor e-Hybrid.

It is a plug-in hybrid SUV, which is available in a 204 HP or 245 HP version (VZ variant). The one with the least power can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 205 km/h. The other, with a top speed of 210 km/h, reaches 100 km/h from a standstill in 7 seconds. It has a 13 kWh lithium-ion battery, capable of storing enough energy to offer an electric range of up to 59 kilometers; 55 km to the VZ. This allows you to enjoy the advantages offered by the DGT 0 Emissions label.

Wayne Griffiths, CEO of Cupra, has pointed out that the brand identifies with Bayona’s trajectory: “In a short time, we have both made our way in the world of automotive and cinema thanks to our disruptive nature.” “We have a common passion: putting emotion at the heart of our work and inspiring the world from Barcelona,” commented the company’s head.

This addition to the Cupra tribe – that is what they call themselves – occurs just when their latest film, The Snow Society (2023), has been chosen as a candidate by Spain in the next edition of the Oscars. Likewise, it has been selected to compete for the Golden Globe for best foreign language film.

Bayona is already accustomed to both national and international recognition for his films. He debuted in film direction with El orfanato (2007), premiered at the Cannes Festival and recognized with seven Goya awards, including best new director. With The Impossible (2012) he won five Goya Awards, and earned an Oscar nomination for his protagonist Naomi Watts. After these titles came films such as A Monster Comes to See Me (2016), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), Penny Dreadful (2014-2016) and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022).

For its part, Cupra was born in 2018 with the aim of challenging the status quo and, in just five years, it has won more than 165 international awards and is one of the fastest growing car brands in Europe.

“I share with Cupra an exciting and innovative vision of the world, and like them, a passion for everything we do. For this reason, we are going to collaborate on several cultural projects together with other entities to promote young creative talent, from Barcelona to the rest of the world,” commented J.A. Bayonne.

During the event, the car brand and the producer have announced that they are going to launch, in collaboration with the Escola Superior de Cinema i Audiovisuals de Catalunya (ESCAC), two contests created with the objective of finding the young creative talent of the new generation and boost him in his professional career around the world of cinema.

The first competition will be for short films, aimed at young talents between 17 and 23 years old. The winner will get a full scholarship to develop their cinematographic talent at the ESCAC. The second is aimed at young people between 21 and 30 years old who have completed a degree, master’s degree or who are former students of the ESCAC. This action will be annual and the winner will receive support to produce and promote their short film.
