At least 20 people have died this Wednesday in the crash of a truck against several vehicles stopped on a highway in Venezuela, according to local media.

The accident occurred on the Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho highway, near the El Araguaney sector, which connects the capital Caracas with the east of the country. The truck crashed at high speed into several cars stopped due to a previous accident, which caused no injuries.

17 vehicles were involved in the accident, including a bus that burned completely, said the Deputy Minister of Risk Management and Civil Protection, Carlos PĂ©rez Ampueda. The collision was aggravated because the truck was transporting thinner, which subsequently exploded.

Images posted on social media show huge flames rising from the crash site.

In addition, at the time of the accident, asphalt remodeling work was being carried out on the road, which delayed the arrival of emergency services.
