The PSPV today begins a roadmap towards an express renewal that will conclude with new leadership, presumably, in February 2024. As this newspaper explained, everything points to a unity candidacy led by Minister Diana Mortant who has the endorsement of Ferraz to provoke that generational change that Pedro Sánchez intends.
Today’s executive of the Valencian socialists has to “activate” this process because as its still general secretary, Ximo Puig, said on Saturday in the party’s National Committee, “there is no time to lose.” Everything indicates that a new committee will have to be convened to decide the date and formally convene the Congress that Puig placed in the first quarter of 2024.
In addition, the executive has to decide the name of the new spokesperson in Les Corts, after the departure of Rebeca Torró, who until now was the trustee of the parliamentary group. He also left his position as deputy spokesperson for Arcadi Spain to also be appointed Secretary of State, so there are two gaps to fill.
From minute one, the name that sounds the loudest to take the reins of a very inexperienced group in Les Corts is that of José Muñoz, who is also the Secretary of Organization of the federation. The majority places him as the great favorite to confront Carlos Mazón from his seat.
However, sources close to Puig do not rule out the PSPV deputy and vice-secretary of Equality, Rosa Peris, although they see Muñoz as better positioned. It must be taken into account that these positions are conditioned by the proximity of the extraordinary congress and that, depending on its result, the group leadership that is elected today does not have to have continuity.
Another unknown is knowing when Puig will resign from his seat in Les Corts. From the PSPV, it is emphasized that this decision “does not have to be a reason for debate in the executive” so they point out that it could happen at any time; It is enough to present a letter of resignation in the registry of the regional Parliament. It will be necessary to see if the socialist president wishes to be present at the approval of the first budgets of the Government of Carlos Mazón with Vox that are approved this week.
