The price of grapes in supermarkets and hypermarkets has increased up to 227% in the last two months, according to a price analysis carried out by Facua throughout the year in eight large supermarkets and hypermarkets in the country.
At Aldi, the 500 gram package of El Mercado brand seedless grapes was on sale in October for 1.19 grams, in November its price increased to 3.19 euros while this December it has risen again to 3. .89 euros. The increase in price of this product in this German chain has been 227% in just two months.
In Alcampo, the 500 gram tray of seedless white grapes was 1.79 euros in October, while in November it rose to 1.92 and in December to 3.00 euros, 67%), and in Mercadona the increase in this same period has been 56% (from 1.75 to 2.73 euros); in Eroski 56.3% (from 1.74 to 2.72 euros) and in Lidl 53.7% (from 1.69 in October to 2.69 euros in December).
At Carrefour, for its part, this same package of grapes was 1.84 euros in October, rose to 2.25 in November until reaching 2.65 euros in December (44% increase).
Facua recalls that grapes, like the rest of fruits and other basic foods, currently have VAT reduced from 4 to 0%, and has once again asked the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030 to open an investigation to determine if large distribution chains are violating the law by applying price increases to foods affected by the VAT reduction, such as grapes.
