The ‘president’ of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, has announced that the Ministry of Health will implement a single waiting list to opt for a kidney transplant in the Valencian Community, as is already the case with waiting lists for other organ transplants. “The goal is that all patients who need it have the opportunity to receive a kidney transplant in the shortest possible time,” he said.
Mazón explained that this measure, which is included in the Strategic Plan for Donations and Transplants on which the Ministry of Health is working, will mean “unifying” the different waiting lists that currently exist in various health departments of the Valencian Community in in which this type of intervention is performed and “thus equating the wait for a kidney transplant with that of the rest of the organs.”
Likewise, he highlighted that “this year alone, a total of 341 kidney transplants have been carried out to date in hospitals in the Valencian Community, which have changed the lives of 341 people who can now look forward to the future.”
Of the 341 kidney transplants carried out in 2023 as of today, 118 were performed at the La Fe Hospital in València, being the center that has carried out the most interventions of this type, followed by the Doctor Balmis General University Hospital in Alicante (78). and the Doctor Peset University Hospital (70), the Generalitat has indicated in a statement.
The head of the Consell has thanked the “generosity and solidarity” of the citizens of the Valencian Community and the “professionalism” of its health personnel, which have allowed the Valencian Community to reach a “record” number of kidney transplants in 2023. And he has highlighted “the high degree of preparation, involvement and coordination” of the health services of a hospital involved in carrying out a transplant.
In this sense, he has expressed his recognition of the work carried out by the transplant healthcare team, of which he has expressed feeling “very proud” and which he has referred to as “the best example of what teamwork and team effort entail.” different professionals”.
Likewise, he mentioned the donors and their families “for the very important decision they made at a very difficult time in their lives” and noted that “it represents such a great gesture of generosity that we will never be able to thank them enough.”
Carlos Mazón has announced that the donation rate in the Valencian Community per million inhabitants is already double the European rate, multiplied by four that of Germany and is above the national average. Specifically, the rate stands at 51 donors per million population (pmp) in the Valencian Community, 22 pmp donors in the European Union and just over 11 pmp donors in Germany.
Along these lines, the ‘president’ has pointed out that the data reflect that the possibility of being transplanted in the Valencian Community is four times greater than that of being transplanted in Germany and twice that of other EU countries.
Finally, he expressed the Consell’s “firm” commitment to continue working to improve opportunities for people who require an organ transplant in the Valencian Community.
