A resident of Barcelona committed suicide on Christmas Eve due to the imminence of her eviction, as reported this Sunday by the Llogaters’ Union in a statement. The entity assures that the real estate agency and the owner of the apartment activated the eviction process “without consideration and at the first opportunity, due to a first delay in the payment of rent.” The municipal services had managed to postpone the eviction for a month while they looked for an alternative home “that did not arrive”, and the woman finally took her own life “with all her belongings already in boxes”, explains the Union.

“We cannot remain silent in the face of yet another example of an unfair, absurd and sick system,” says the Union, which regrets that when a situation like this arrives, “everything has failed.”

In this sense, he stated that “a system in which the population is not guaranteed decent, stable and safe housing” fails and that “even makes desperation and suffering profitable.” Likewise, he has criticized the public approach to the housing problem, regretting that only extensions and moratoriums are offered but the underlying problem cannot be resolved.

“The threat of losing your home, of not being able to pay for it, of being expelled from home, is a cause of unbearable anguish for more and more people,” he lamented. “She was fighting but she couldn’t take it anymore,” she added.

The Mossos and the Urban Police, consulted by EFE, have not confirmed the situation reported by the union.
