This Tuesday morning, a street sweeper from Bisbal d’Empordà found a dead baby in a trash can in the center of the municipality. The events occurred around 7 in the morning, when the worker was doing his usual cleaning schedule.
The creature was inside a plastic bag and at the moment it is unknown how long it had been there. The last time the trash can was collected was this past Saturday, according to municipal sources.
The sweeper discovered the baby’s body when he was about to manually empty the contents of the bag. It is unknown if the child was stillborn, a birth that occurred in a private setting. It will be the autopsy that will determine the causes and time of the child’s death.
According to the Catalan News Agency, the baby still had its umbilical cord hanging inside the bin bag on Germans Sitjar Street, where it was found. It is a very central area of ??the capital of Baix Empordà, located behind the church and near Calle Ample.
The emergency services and the Local Police arrived nearby a few minutes later, unable to save the baby’s life. Immediately afterwards, the Criminal Investigation Area of ??the Girona region of the Mossos d’Esquadra was activated to try to provide an explanation for this event.
An investigation is being carried out through security cameras in the area, which is a very central and pedestrian area of ??the municipality, with restricted access by vehicles, in the central area of ??the town where about 11,000 people live, of which one 25% are foreigners.
In the area there are several businesses such as a bakery and a herbalist, although right in front of the trash can where the child’s body was found there is a business that does not have security cameras.
In parallel, visits by pregnant women treated at the Primary Care Center (CAP) of La Bisbal d’Empordà are also being investigated. Before 10:30 a.m. the body had already been removed. The judge handling the case has decreed secrecy of the proceedings.
