The deplorable situation that has been experienced during these Christmas holidays in many streets of Girona, with containers full for more than a day and garbage piled up on the sidewalks, has resulted, for the moment, in a file against the company concessionaire of the cleaning and waste management, Girona Neta, by the City Council.
According to data provided today by Girona City Council, between December 22 and January 2, 22% of street cleaning and waste collection services were not carried out. Specifically, 304 of the 1,398 services scheduled during these dates have not been executed.
31% of street cleaning services (209 of 668) have not been carried out. Nor has 14% of waste collection been carried out (75 out of 544), a fact that has left unfortunate images that have been captured and viralized through social networks by residents of different neighborhoods of the city.
On Christmas Day, only 87 of the 143 scheduled services were carried out, 61% of the total. And on January 1, only 59 of the 140 that were required were executed, which means that not even half of the service was covered that day. Specifically, only 42% of the planned actions were carried out.
Given this situation, the government team will study whether to sanction the concessionaire company and urge it to comply with the contract to guarantee cleanliness in the city. The City Council hopes that after Christmas “the service will return to its regular operation.”
Just today, before the City Council informed the company Girona Neta of this file, the municipal group of the PSC-Girona pel Canvi has criticized “the worsening of the lack of cleanliness in the city in recent weeks” and has accused the government municipal “of lack of foresight, reaction and poor management”.
Councilor Carla Aguilera has denounced that “the people of Girona now pay more for their garbage bill and the situation is worse than ever” and considers that the current cleaning contract “does not respond to the needs of the city.”
