I captured this photograph for La Vanguardia’s Readers’ Photos when I was cycling along the Vies Verdes route in Girona.

The Vies Verdes de Girona (125 km) are accessible and safe spaces to explore on foot or by bicycle that follow the old route of the train line, linking the Pyrenees with the Costa Brava, according to Turisme del Gironès.

Among its different sections we find the Ruta del Carrilet, which on its way passes through different municipalities of Gironès: Sarrià de Ter, Bescanó, Salt, Gerona, Quart, Llambilles, Cassà de la Selva and Llagostera. An ideal route for lovers of cycling or hiking.

The Consorci Vies Verdes offer, in addition to the marked itinerary, documentation, information and optional services to contract for cyclists.

“Greenways” are understood as those communication infrastructures developed on railway sections not affected by traffic and on nature trails intended for non-motorized users, pedestrians, cyclists or people with reduced mobility, which can be used for recreational purposes and for movements between activity centers.

They are generally non-motorized communication corridors, easy, pleasant to navigate and safe. The route is accessible and integrated into the natural environment.

In addition, those who dare can also take the Pirinexus route (350 km), a cross-border cycling ring, a circular route that links the Girona regions with Vallespir and Roussillon. It passes through a total of 53 towns and 5 different regions, combining greenway layouts with other cycle routes such as rural roads or roads with low traffic density.
