Queen Margaret of Denmark, a few hours before her abdication after 52 years on the throne, made a surprise appearance at the tribute concert held in Copenhagen. This event, held in Kongens Nytorv, the largest square in the Danish capital, was a celebration of her reign, organized by the public radio station DR and the television channel TV 2.
In her speech, the still Danish queen wanted to address the nation from her residence in the Palace of Christian IX. Wearing a maroon dress and a red jacket, the Queen of Denmark expressed her deep gratitude for the tribute received: “I don’t know how to express my gratitude for the fantastic celebration you have given me. I am almost speechless. But thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone those who have conceived this evening and to all those who have carried it out. May God save you all.”
The concert featured notable artists such as Scarlet Pleasure, Safri Duo, Sanne Salomonsen and many others, culminating with a performance by the musical trio Scarlet Pleasure. In addition to music, the concert included humorous skits, dances from the Royal Theater and greetings from Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
Margaret’s decision to abdicate, announced on New Year’s Eve, marks a historic moment for Denmark. Her abdication on Sunday will be the first time in almost 900 years that a Danish monarch has voluntarily renounced the throne.
This transition of power to his eldest son, Prince Frederick, closes one chapter in the history of the Danish monarchy, but also opens another, full of expectations under the next reign.
Margarita’s decision has unleashed all kinds of speculation. After back surgery in February and a long convalescence, many wonder if this was the deciding factor in her abdication. However, royal expert Phil Dampier has suggested that the surprise decision could have been aimed at strengthening the bond between Prince Frederick and Princess Mary, especially after rumors of infidelity that surrounded the Prince in 2023.
