The Witcher is already filming the fourth season. Netflix uploaded a video to show that, indeed, they are getting to work with the already announced change of protagonist: Liam Hemsworth will be Geralt De Rivia after the abandonment of Henry Cavill for creative reasons. And the platform has also warned: the fantastic series has an expiration date.

“It’s official, the fourth season of The Witcher is in production. But this is not all, we are already planning the fifth season, which will be the final season and will bring this epic series to its proper conclusion,” they warned from the official Netflix profiles. Therefore, bittersweet news: it is renewed and, at the same time, it is already preparing to close with Lauren Schmidt Hissrich finishing the last arc of the witcher.

Hemsworth isn’t the only new face of The Witcher in the upcoming episodes, which also return Anya Chalotra as Yennifer, Freya Allan as Ciri, and Joey Batey as Jaskey. Laurence Fishburne, known for his work in the Matrix trilogy or the Hannibal series, will be Regis, a character admired by fans of Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels who hides a secret that will make Geralt face his prejudices.

Netflix has therefore made the decision to close The Witcher even before seeing how the audience reacts to Hemsworth’s work as the protagonist, and at the same time giving it a vote of confidence with a total of two seasons on board the project. The upcoming conclusion, consequently, seems motivated by creative reasons and the needs of the platform, not very accustomed to letting its series go beyond the fifth season.

And why won’t Cavill be there? While it was assumed that the British actor was the ideal actor for the character, as a lover of Sapkowski’s work, he decided to leave the series due to his vision of the character and what the production should be: he was not happy with the work of Schmidt Hissrich. as creator and showrunner of The Witcher.

Having a leading actor who was a fan of the reference work turned out to be a disadvantage: feeling disappointed with the material, he preferred to leave despite heading one of Netflix’s flagship series.
