On December 31, Queen Margaret announced that she would abdicate this Sunday in January in favor of her son Frederick. And so she has done it: after 52 years occupying the throne of Denmark, Margaret II has transferred the position to her eldest son and has made, at the same time, Prince Christian her heir.
To this day, she is the longest-reigning living monarch in Europe, a fact that has allowed her to witness numerous notable moments in the history of the 20th and 21st centuries.
On the day of her abdication and the proclamation of Frederick X, Margaret II wanted to show off a true talisman that has accompanied her throughout her career. The queen has worn her red ruby ??horseshoe brooch, which she received from her father when she became heir to the throne at age 13. As for her choice of clothing, she has opted for a matching red jacket and skirt.
This brooch has a very special meaning for her, as she also wore it on the day she took office as monarch in January 1972, at Christiansborg Palace, Copenhagen, one day after the death of her father, Frederick IX.
The abdication scene was most emotional, since Margaret II, after signing her declaration, closed the Council of State with the words “God save the king.” Afterwards, she got up, left the seat for her son and left the room alone, clearly excited. She finally left the castle by car amidst cheers and applause.
