The Snow Society continues its unstoppable path on the list of nominated films in the awards season. The Netflix blockbuster directed by J.A. Bayona, about the aerial tragedy in the Andes of 1972, has been chosen as one of the five candidates for best foreign language film at the 77th edition of the BAFTA awards given by the British Film Academy and whose gala will be held on Sunday the 18th. of February.
The Spanish director’s film will compete with The Zone of Interest, by Jonathan Glazer, the Korean-language American film Past Lives, by Celine Song; the Ukrainian documentary 20 Days in Mariupol, directed by Mstyslav Chernov, and the French Anatomy of a Fall, by Justine Triet, a big favorite after winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, two Golden Globes and the Critics Choice in the category of best foreign language film.
The Snow Society, nominated for 13 Goya awards and Spanish representative at the Oscars, was among the fifteen finalists in the best international film category and next Tuesday it will be known if it is among the five finalists for the Oscar. It might not be his only Hollywood Academy Awards nomination, as he also made the cut in three other categories: makeup and hair, original music and special effects.
Released in theaters last December 15, the film portrays the air disaster that occurred 51 years ago, when Flight 571 of the Uruguayan Air Force, chartered to take a rugby team to Chile, crashed and the survivors were trapped in one of the most inaccessible and hostile environments on the planet. The Snow Society landed on Netflix on January 4 and in just eleven days it has been among the 10 most viewed non-English speaking films in the history of the platform with more than 51 million views worldwide.
