Pedro Sánchez’s tendency to expand the federal executive of the PSOE, to guarantee peace and internal cohesion, in addition to maintaining the necessary territorial balances, led his team on previous occasions to fear that a partition would have to be torn down from the Ferraz headquarters so that everyone will enter. But its members will still have to tighten their grip, because the party’s leadership will continue to grow. Up to 47 leaders will make it up from now on, according to the proposal that will be ratified this Sunday by the federal committee of the PSOE that will meet in A Coruña within the framework of the political convention that will be held this weekend in the Galician city.
Sánchez, finally, has also chosen to incorporate the third vice president of the Government and minister for the Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, as a new member without portfolio of the PSOE executive. In this way, up to eleven members of the Government will have a place at the top of the party, to keep their connection lubricated to the maximum before a legislature that is expected to be very intense and the new electoral cycle that will unfold in 2024, with the first stop in the Galician elections on February 18.
Specifically, Sánchez himself will be part of Ferraz’s new executive, as general secretary of the party; the first vice president of the Government, María Jesús Montero, as deputy general secretary of the PSOE; the third vice president, Teresa Ribera, as a member; and the ministers Félix Bolaños –secretary of justice, constitutional reform and new rights-, Ana Redondo –secretary of equality-, Isabel Rodríguez –secretary of housing and urban agenda-, Diana Morant –secretary of science, innovation and universities- and Pilar Alegría , Óscar Puente, Jordi Hereu and Elma Sáiz, all of them as members without portfolio.
Once the mystery of the new spokesperson for the PSOE executive has been revealed, a position that Esther Peña will assume to replace Pilar Alegría, another of the surprises in the composition of the brand new socialist leadership is the return of the veteran Paco Salazar, as the new secretary of research and analysis of training. Sánchez had already recovered Salazar – one of his early faithful – as general secretary of political planning in Moncloa, and now he also gives him back a seat on Ferraz’s executive.
Santos Cerdán’s right-hand man in the organization secretariat, Juan Francisco Serrano, will earn stripes by being promoted to deputy secretary of this portfolio. And another veteran, the mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, will maintain his position as a member of the executive, while the now highest socialist representative in the Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, Inés Rey –precisely mayor of A Coruña- will join the new socialist leadership. Among other novelties, the leader of the Andalusian socialists, Juan Espadas, will also join the executive in his capacity as spokesperson for the PSOE in the Senate. And another Sánchez faithful from the first hour, the Sevillian Alfonso Rodríguez Gómez de Celis –vice president of Congress-, will hand over the municipal politics secretary to the Extremadura native, Marisol Mateos, to now assume the secretary of the institutional area and large cities.
