Junts has been on the pulse of current politics since it agreed to support the government of Pedro Sánchez, with which the political puzzle put on the scene after the July 23 elections was unraveled. One of the hottest points of this collaboration is the Amnesty Law, with which the Catalan political party wants to free from all the crimes and complications that weigh on those responsible for the referendum of October 1, 2017.

This has been one of the many topics that has been discussed in the current affairs discussion on El Hormiguero, the Antena 3 nighttime program presented by Pablo Motos. Cristina Pardo, Tamara Falcó, Núria Roca and Juan de Val have commented on one of the latest developments in this saga between Junts and PSOE: the addition of new amendments to allow Carles Puigdemont to return to Spain without being arrested and the exclusion of the causes for terrorism.

Going into details, Junts wants to modify the start date that the Amnesty Law would cover: from January 1, 2022 to November 1, 2011, thus adding the cases where lawfare would have occurred and eliminating the causes of terrorism that affected several of those responsible for organizing the referendum. This situation would also allow the case against other leaders such as Artur Mas to be included, in addition to allowing Puigdemont to return to the Peninsula.

According to Pardo, the PSOE would be in favor of the amendment on the former president of the Generalitat, while the second would be generating friction in the socialist formation. Juan de Val, in a forceful manner, has indicated that only from Brussels “this attack could be stopped”, having doubts about all the leaders and people who could be affected by the modifications. The program has given examples of the cases of Mas and also that of Laura Borràs.

For the moment, Junts voted in favor of the amendments presented by the PSOE itself and Esquerra this past Thursday. These modifications have been approved in the Justice Commission and had the support of Sumar, Esquerra itself, EH Bildu and BNG. In this way, and pending the disputes pending resolution, the way would be clear for the Amnesty Law could be debated in the Congress of Deputies, the last step before its possible approval.

At the moment, the date of this debate is still unknown, with the date of January 30 flying over the surroundings of the parties. Although the contrary position of the other political forces, PP and Vox, is clear, the assessment of the law in person will be one of the hottest points of current politics in 2024. If there are no negatives at the last minute, the accounts could give approval to the norm with 178 votes compared to 172 negative.
