“Art should be enjoyed by everyone, I do not conceive my creations any other way; my works are created expressly to be enjoyed, also, with the sense of touch.” The Valencian artist Tatiana Roig says this when referring to the selection of works that she has exhibited in the Galeria Cuatro de València, one of the most reputable, under the title “Forbidden not to touch.” Works made to be perceived through touch, as she says, which allows people with visual disabilities to perceive the creation.
The exhibition takes a tour of the artist from her beginnings, marked by works with natural textures, to the present, with her new Scales Series, awarded with an Honorable Mention at the Ciutat Vella Oberta Biennial. “My artistic style is framed within material abstract art,” says the creator. She adds that all of her works have volumes “to complete the compression through touch.”
In the creation he uses demolition material, recycled material, scraps, elements present in nature such as marble, gravel, rocks, sand, minerals, even natural pearls. “The German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer is without a doubt my greatest reference. I saw his work firsthand at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and since then I have been captivated by his works,” he adds.
This is Tatiana Roig’s first SOLO at Galería Cuatro since she became known as an emerging artist at the gallery in 2020 with her work “Niebla.” “I debuted in galleries with Miguel and David Castillo, at Galería Cuatro, they discovered me as artists since, at that time, I was a news journalist and I dedicated myself to art in a non-professional way.”
She adds regarding these galleries that “they have always supported young talent, disruptive techniques and have shown their support for women artists. Thanks to them, today I continue to hold exhibitions and show my inclusive art nationally and internationally,” says the artist”.
ONCE has carried out several organized visits with blind people to learn about the art of Tatiana Roig. The exhibition has posters in braille to facilitate understanding, a video with explanatory audio about the artistic process and a NaviLens QR code so that people with visual disabilities can access the content of the exhibition
Tatiana says that “I cannot conceive of art if the viewer does not feel with their hands what I try to capture on the canvas. Sight, touch and hearing are fundamental to give meaning to my creations. A way for blind people or people with visual difficulties also can enjoy art.”
In addition to Tatiana Roig, other exhibitions have been organized to be enjoyed by people with visual disabilities such as “Today the Prado is playing” (Travelling Project) of the National Prado Museum and which includes the relief reproduction of pictorial work or “Museum by hand” of the Reina Sofía Museum and that programmed the selection or reproduction of sculptural work.
