As concerns about healthy eating grow, so do myths and urban legends around what we eat. Salmon, a fish valued for its enormous nutrients, is no exception.

Recently, Mario Ortiz, a popular nutritionist, uploaded a video to TikTok to clarify one of the most widespread myths about supermarket salmon, assuring his followers that there is more fiction than reality in what many fear.

In his video, Ortiz dismantles the idea that salmon purchased in stores contains dangerous levels of heavy metals. These materials, such as mercury, lead, cadmium and arsenic, can cause damage to the brain, nervous system, kidneys and even cancer.

But there is no need to be afraid. The presence of this type of metals in supermarket salmon is highly unlikely. Of course, it specifies that wild salmon can have quantities that you have to be careful with.

In this sense, he explains that, while larger fish in the wild can accumulate these metals, farmed salmon, which are sold in stores, are fed with controlled feed that prevents this accumulation. With a simple and direct explanation, he states: “I have seen alarmist videos, but there is no need to worry.”

The nutrition expert also talks about the nutritional composition of farmed salmon compared to wild salmon. Although farmed salmon may have less fat and omega-3, Ortiz emphasizes that this should not be interpreted as something negative, since some people may find it worth it that it also has fewer calories and is cheaper.
