In Alto Tejuelo, in Cantabria, a historic milestone has occurred in the world of caving. After several years of work, a group of speleologists from Spain and Belgium have managed to connect the largest cave route in the entire Iberian Peninsula, with a total of 206 kilometers of tunnels.

The Alto Tejuelo system is located between the municipalities of San Roque de Río Miera, Linto, Bustablando, Arredondo, Socueva and Calseca. Within this layout there are many natural curiosities that surprise speleologists, such as, for example, the soundproof passage – where a whitish natural element has the peculiarity of absorbing sound -, underground rivers and spectacular cavities.

With this connection, the Cantabrian community now has the largest network of tunnels in Spain and the entire peninsula and the second longest in Europe, surpassed by four kilometers by Switzerland.
