If we live outside our country, it is likely that we will miss our family, but also some of the typical dishes of Spanish gastronomy. A stew in the case of the people of Madrid, a fabada for the Asturians, fried fish for the Andalusians or a good octopus if we are Galicians.
But there is a transversal dish for all communities, although with more roots in the Valencian Community: paella. And if we live in the US, it will be difficult to find a restaurant where they prepare one respecting basic standards.
Given the lack of gastronomic offerings, many residents resort to preparing it at home, but nothing is economical, according to a Spanish couple currently living in the country on TikTok.
The first thing they had to do was buy some irons and a large paella pan. Both things have cost them “around 600 dollars” (554 euros at the exchange rate). Two packages of Calasparra rice have a price of 18 dollars (about 16 euros).
The bill does not stop increasing. The cost of the meat is about 30 dollars (27 euros). The broth packets that are going to be added to the rice, bought in a supermarket, cost about 20 dollars (about 18 euros). The sautéed vegetables, 10 dollars (a little more than 9 euros). And the forget-me-not oil, essential, about 15 dollars (about 13 euros).
If we add the price of saffron, the cost of making a paella in the US amounts to 637 euros, according to this couple on their social networks, much more expensive than if we prepare it or eat it to order in Spain.
