The Metropolitan Area of ??Barcelona (AMB) has promised this Wednesday to take a leap in the generation of solar energy. Specifically, they plan to multiply the photovoltaic light they create in public facilities by six, launching up to 146 new installations in just 18 months. They have calculated generating the equivalent consumption of 4,200 homes, which represents 4.1% of municipal supplies.

“We are on time, there is hope in the face of catastrophic speeches” about the climate emergency, said the vice president of Climate Action of the AMB, Janet Sanz. The new installations are solar panels and photo strips. With them, all AMB municipalities except Barcelona – which has its own dynamics – will have at least one facility with these characteristics.

How do you want to achieve this goal in such a short time? “Things can be done differently, in collaboration with city councils but also with the private sector,” said Sanz.

A part of the investments will be paid for through a system called Esco in which the company is in charge of making the investment in the installation. They will recover it through the savings generated by the self-consumption of the equipment.

Once the investment amortization period is exceeded – about 15 years – the City Council recovers 100% of the savings. “The plates can have a useful life of between 25 and 30 years,” said Guille López, CEO of Acció Climàtica of the AMB, at a press conference. A public competition was held, divided into two lots, and the winners were two companies in the sector, which are the ones that will create the facilities for this package.

It will not be the only financing method, there are others such as the AMB environmental sustainability plan, which is an investment plan; and the Feder funds of the European Union. The plates will be installed in facilities such as schools and sports facilities.
