A man who was traveling in a drug boat died today after the boat collided with a Civil Guard patrol boat, sources close to the armed institute have reported.

The accident occurred this afternoon at the mouth of the Guadalquivir river, in Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz).

A Civil Guard patrol boat observed that in the area there was a drug boat stopped, with no one apparently on it.

The patrol boat approached and, when it was next to it, the occupants, who were lying on the boat, upon realizing the presence of the agents, started the boat to try to escape.

When they started it, instead of heading to the side where they wanted to flee, the boat did so towards the side where the patrol boat was, colliding with it.

One of the occupants was injured in the impact, he underwent surgery at the Sanlúcar de Barrameda hospital and was later transferred to the Puerta del Mar hospital in Cádiz, where he died.

The other three occupants of the drug boat have been arrested and are in Civil Guard facilities.

The patrol boat agents were uninjured, although their boat was damaged in the crash.
