Itziar Ituño has broken his silence. More than three weeks have passed since the protagonist of Berlin attended a demonstration called by Sare to denounce the “legal exceptionality” suffered by ETA prisoners and, since then, she has not stopped receiving criticism and sparking all kinds of comments.
The Biscayan actress verbalized her response on January 23 through social networks, assuring her followers that she was not going to forget their support. However, weeks later, she finally responded directly to critics, stating that what happened to her had been worthy of a “witch hunt.”
The interpreter of Money Heist was forceful and demonstrated this in her statements to Europa Press, during the celebration of the Gaudí Awards. “It cannot be that in the 21st century there continue to be witch hunts for expressing oneself freely, without harming anyone. That cannot be. And I am who I am, and this is what there is.”
The image of the actress, in the front line of the demonstration and carrying the main banner, received a wave of attacks and criticism on social networks, in addition to the suspension of several of the advertising and image contracts that Ituño had with some brands.
During the celebration of the Catalan film awards, the interpreter assured that, despite all the criticism, she received the love of the people. “The truth is that I received a wave of solidarity, of affection, of empathy that rearms you and makes you settle a little on your principles,” she declared.
The actress had expressed her political position on ETA prisoners on numerous occasions before this controversy. Despite everything, the interpreter received the support of the Basque Government, who assured that the demonstration complied with all the requirements that “legality imposes”; in addition to the affection of many colleagues, such as Carlos Bardem, Lluís Tosar or Antonio de la Torre.
The Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, also wanted to offer his support to the Biscayan actress during one of her interventions in the Congress of Deputies. “I convey all my support, I want to say this as Minister of Culture,” he said. “I believe that no one should be penalized for her ideas and therefore I want to sympathize with her: what she is experiencing is not acceptable.”
