The European Parliament yesterday agreed on a draft resolution regarding Russian interference in democracies, in which, in the absence of possible amendments that will be voted on today, it asks that Spain investigate “the connections of MEPs allegedly linked to the Kremlin”, in reference to the former president and MEP of Junts, Carles Puigdemont.
The draft, negotiated and agreed upon by most groups, except those on the left and the extreme right, expresses “extreme concern about the alleged relations between Catalan secessionists and the Russian administration.”
The text calls for the “competent judicial authorities to effectively investigate the connections of MEPs allegedly linked to the Kremlin and Russia’s attempts to destabilize and interfere in Member States”, while regretting the attacks on judges investigating these cases.
Furthermore, it warns that, “if confirmed, Russian interference in Catalonia would be part of a broader Russian strategy to promote internal destabilization and disunity in the EU.” At the same time, she shows “deep concern” about “the large-scale disinformation campaigns that Russia has carried out in Catalonia.”
Likewise, the text refers to the Voloh case, speaking of “alleged intensive contacts and a series of meetings” between the Russian agents responsible for the interference and the Catalan independence movement, although at no time does it name Puigdemont or his entourage.
Joaquín Aguirre, the investigating judge in the Voloh case, believes that there are indications that Russia was willing to support “economically and militarily” the independence of Catalonia to “destabilize the European Union” and that Puigdemont and members of his entourage maintained “close personal relationships.” ” with German and Italian far-right politicians and with Vladimir Putin’s regime.
In principle, all the main groups of the European Chamber will support the resolution, which is not binding, including the social democratic group, the popular, green, liberal and the European Conservatives and Reformists, where Vox, the Brothers of Italy of Georgia Meloni, or the Flemish nationalist party (N-VA). The only ones who do not support it are the Left group and the extreme right of Identity and Democracy.
This resolution, which is expected to be approved today in plenary session in Strasbourg, comes after on Tuesday, in the debate on the issue, the vice-president of the European Commission, the popular Margaritis Schinas, made reference to “regular and close contacts” between Russian officials “and a group of Catalan secessionists” as an example of Russian interference in EU democracies and called for an investigation.
“It is the duty of this house to investigate who else did what and under what conditions to play the Moscow game,” he added.
