Fabulous Morella castle and the walled city are unique, a visit is mandatory, like the one we have done in La Vanguardia Readers’ Photos to show this photographic report of some of its most emblematic corners.
Morella Castle has historically been one of the most imposing fortresses in the Mediterranean. The passage of numerous civilizations “has left its mark on this impressive construction, inhabited continuously since the 3rd millennium BC”, according to the Tourist Office of this town.
At an architectural level, the military fortress was built taking advantage of the natural rock, in a privileged, strategic location, which made it impregnable and which was vital for controlling the natural passage from the interior to the coast.
In this place, remains from the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron, and also from the Iberian, have been found. But it is in Roman times and later with the arrival of the Visigoths, Arabs and finally the Christians, when the castle reached its splendor.
From the reforms of the 13th-14th centuries, the castle took its best shape, incorporating the technological advances of the art of war of each time.
Characters of great historical importance passed through this castle, such as Abderramán III, El Cid, Jaime I, King Fernando de Antequera, Papa Luna, San Vicente Ferrer, the Prince of Viana and General Cabrera.
