High prices and a limited network of charging points (20,243 at the end of March 2023) are the main brakes on the electric vehicle fleet in Spain, which is still far from the objectives set by the European Union (EU). Added to these two bills is the high cost of cargo.

And some drivers are inventive to keep their batteries topped up. Specifically, a group has gone to the Corte Inglés in Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid) to charge their electric vehicles for free, according to influencer Diego Soria.

In a video published on his Instagram account, this content creator says that only a few minutes have passed since the center opened, but the charging points for electric cars are already completely full. Even some drivers queue.

“There are electric cars waiting to enter because they charge for free. Everything is already full. A couple have gotten angry and almost hit each other to see who would take the charger,” he explains to his followers.

However, in his opinion, “the funniest thing is that many of them stay working inside the vehicles while they charge for free.” An almost perfect plan.

Soria shows his surprise and anger at this practice: “The truth is that I hallucinate.” “It’s surreal. What some people do to charge for free,” he adds.

He is not the only one outraged by the attitude of these drivers. Some users of X (formerly Twitter) have also criticized this initiative. “There is everything, normal people who charge at home and sporadically in chargers like this to take advantage of the fact that it is there. Then there are starving people like these,” says one.

“It’s called posturing. You buy a very expensive car to live like a miserable person. It’s what it is,” adds another. Some ask to act as soon as possible: “A shame, as always people take advantage and annoy others. The solution is the same as always, limit use by time or load by paying a reasonable price.”
