There is always some concern when a series ends the broadcast of a season without having been officially renewed. Invasion, which ended its second season in October, was in this limbo that could lead to cancellation. But, as Apple TV has reported, the alien invasion devised by Simon Kinberg (Deadpool) and David Weil (Hunters) will continue with a third season.
In a statement, Kinberg, who serves as showrunner, has promised that in the new season “the scale, excitement and intensity of the invasion will continue to grow,” and that the characters “will remain at the center of the story and come together in ways that hopefully will surprise.” What he values ??most, in fact, is moving the audience, “who have been incredibly supportive and inspiring from day one.”
When the series premiered in October 2021, it surprised critics due to the pace of Weil and Kinberg’s proposal: they imagined an extraterrestrial invasion from the perspective of a priori normal and ordinary citizens who, suddenly, saw a type of meteorites crashing on planet Earth and society falling into chaos.
Among them was Aneesha (Golshifteh Farahani), a mother in the middle of a marriage crisis and who, because she was Persian, made the neighbors look at her with distrust when the neighborhood lights went out. Trevante (Shamier Anderson), an American soldier in Afghanistan, found himself in the desert with a weapon that he had never seen before and that defied the laws of physics. Mitsuki (Shioli Kutsuna), a cryptologist for the Japanese space agency, lost contact with her partner, an astronaut on a space station. And Caspar (Billy Barratt) was on a field trip when meteorites caused the school bus he was riding in to crash.
With the soundtrack by Max Richter and direction by Jakob Verbruggen, Invasion is the slowest-cooking science fiction bet of a content platform like Apple TV that prioritized this genre with other productions such as For All Humanity and Foundation. In the second, as the particular crisis of humanity was more developed, Invasion took on a different pace after uniting the destinies of a priori disconnected characters and leaving the viewer with a considerable cliffhanger.
Luckily, with this news, the viewer can breathe easy: the plot will continue. Of course, the renewal times force us to think that there will be no new episodes until 2025.
