The Community of Madrid closed 2023 with 86,572 new inhabitants, thus surpassing the barrier of 7 million people living in the region (7,000,621), according to data published yesterday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

The population in the Community has thus recorded an increase of 1.87% compared to the end of 2022, when it registered a total of 6,871,903 residents and an increase of 87,589 inhabitants since the first quarter of that year.

By gender, Madrid has added 43,582 men and 42,990 women to its population in 2023. In addition, of the number of inhabitants registered at the end of the year, the region has recorded an increase of 47,098 new residents of Spanish nationality and 39,474 foreigners.

The population in the Community of Madrid increased by 0.44% in the fourth quarter of 2023 to reach 7,000,621 inhabitants, compared to the 0.18% increase in the national average, a figure that positions the region in the second place in the ranking of population growth in the country, according to INE data.

Thus, the data for the last quarter reflects that, of the 7,000,621 inhabitants that the region had on January 1, 2024, 3,352,591 were men and 3,648,030 were women. In addition, of the total number of residents in the Community as of January 1, 2024, 1,112,554 people were foreigners, and 5,888,067 were Spaniards.

By community, during the fourth quarter of 2023, it is estimated that the population experienced growth in all territories, except in Andalusia (-0.01%) and Extremadura (-0.02%).

The largest increases in relative terms occurred in Melilla (0.64%), Comunidad de Madrid (0.44%), Comunitat Valenciana (0.41%), Murcia (0.23%) and Navarra (0.18% ). For their part, Aragón (0.01%), La Rioja (0.03%), Castilla y León (0.07%) and Galicia (0.08%) have registered the smallest increases.

Based on information from the INE, Spain’s population growth has registered an average increase of 0.18%, up to 48.6 million inhabitants, which was almost entirely due to the increase in people born abroad.

Thus, the number of foreigners increased by 72,504 people during the fourth quarter, up to a total of 6,491,502 as of January 1, 2024. Likewise, the population of Spanish nationality has also recorded an increase in the same period, with an increase of 13,366 people.

The population born abroad was 8,775,213 people, greater than that of foreign nationality, due to the Spanish nationalization processes.

The main nationalities of immigrants during the fourth quarter were Colombian (with 42,600 arrivals in Spain), Venezuelan (27,300) and Moroccan (25,800).

For their part, the most numerous nationalities of emigrants were Spanish (with 10,400 departures), Moroccan (9,500) and Romanian (8,100).
