Just over a week ago, two guards died after a boat operated by drug traffickers collided with them off the coast of Barbate, Cádiz. One of the deceased, David Pérez, was 43 years old, married, had two children and was assigned to the Rapid Action Group (GAR). The other, named Miguel Ángel González, was 39 years old, lived with his partner and his daughter and was part of the Group of Underwater Activities Specialists (GEAS).

In addition to the two deceased, the event left another guard seriously injured and another slightly injured. Two other officers were unharmed. Since the events occurred, the Civil Guard has worked tirelessly and has arrested eight people, including the six crew members of the boat that cost the lives of the two guards. The judge hearing the case has ordered the provisional imprisonment of the six individuals who were on the drug boat accused of murdering the agents.

The Mediaset España program Horizonte wanted to pay tribute to the men who died in the act of service by dedicating a minute of silence to them at the beginning of the broadcast of its weekly program.

“This minute of silence serves as a tribute to those two people, members of the Civil Guard, murdered in Barbate,” said Iker Jiménez after spending more than sixty seconds in absolute silence on the set of Cuatro.

Jiménez acknowledged to the audience that it was José Félix Ramajo, security expert at Horizonte, who encouraged him to start the night with said tribute: ”Iker, how nice it would be to do a minute of silence on television in honor of the entire Civil Guard’ ‘.

”A minute of silence on television is anti-television, but this is Horizonte and it quickly convinced me,” said the Basque communicator, implying that the entire program team agreed with said initiative.

Iker Jiménez, Carmen Porter, José Félix Ramajo and the rest of the collaborators not only respected the minute of silence, but also stood up while an image of the two deceased guards and the Spanish flag decorated the Mediaset set.

The television scene has given a lot to talk about on social networks. While many Internet users have defended that it is a very beautiful moment and have thanked Horizonte for this tribute to the work and sacrifice of the Civil Guard, others have shown their rejection of the behavior of the program team.
