Emotional blockage consists of that feeling of not being able to think clearly and feeling that the mind goes blank, making the person who experiences it feel unable to make decisions or find a way to act. That is, it “blocks,” which generates psychological discomfort that can become overwhelming. This is usually one of the symptoms of anxiety, the consequence of emotionally repressing oneself instead of channeling negative thoughts and sensations in a healthy way.

This can happen sporadically, in high-stress situations such as exam seasons or an important event, or it can be frequent. In this case, anxiety disorders, depression or cases of post-traumatic stress are some of the most common scenarios after emotional blockages. The symptoms that give them away have to do, above all, with a feeling of emptiness, marked mental fatigue and feeling strong pressure or tension. But you can also experience body pain, motor paralysis, concentration problems, digestive discomfort and even tremors.

The main problem of emotional blocks is precisely the fact that they paralyze the person who suffers from them, thus preventing them from carrying on with their daily lives normally and severely affecting their performance. This situation can occur due to very varied situations, so that no one is completely free from suffering one of these blockages, for example, due to excessive or excessive self-demand.

And it’s easy to fall into a circle from which you don’t really know how to get out, often because you don’t know what’s happening or what that feeling is. Therefore, when an emotional blockage is identified, the most important thing will be to carry out a series of measures to overcome it.

Precisely this is the first step that psychologist Jaume Guinot points out to escape an emotional block: identify it. Since this will open the door to finding the cause that causes it and, then, dealing with it in the most effective way possible. The specialist explains that they must be faced by understanding where this blockage comes from, which occurs due to a specific fear, despite how complicated it may be at first. “Emotional blockages are undoubtedly one of our most significant internal struggles,” admits Jaume Guinot. That is why it requires “effort and will” to overcome them.

Once all this has been achieved, an awareness of emotional blockages is acquired, which is vital to being able to deal with them. “When we understand where it comes from, what it is like and when it happens to us, we can find the ideal ‘antibody’ to confront it,” says the specialist. And this consists of controlling and managing emotions, never repressing them.
