The new portal integrates and facilitates access and dissemination of the data guarded and managed by the City Council, as well as the high-quality analyzes that the municipal areas produce on the history, recent evolution and current situation of the city. It stands out for its ease of use and accessibility, regardless of the user’s technological training, as it allows for thematic searches in free language. It can be consulted in Catalan, Spanish and English.
It integrates data, documents, surveys, maps and other content that allows us to know and analyze the situation and evolution of the city of Barcelona from multiple points of view: demographic, economic, social, cultural or political. Barcelona Dades also adds value by publishing new data updated very frequently: minutes, hours or days, depending on the case.
The development of the tool has been carried out by the Municipal Data Office with the Municipal Institute of Informatics in collaboration with the company Bestiario, which won the open public bidding process. In the two years that the project has been worked on, the Agile methodology has been used, rare in the public sector, which has allowed for checks and changes to be made on the fly.
The Barcelona Dades portal integrates and aggregates the following municipal data dissemination spaces, active during the last two decades: the website of the Department of Statistics and Data Dissemination, the Barcelona Economia website or the Dades Obertes (Open Data) service. And it connects with other municipal services such as the Registry of Opinion Surveys and Studies or the BCNROC document repository. The objective is to increase the visits that these municipal websites currently receive.
A reference in the public sphere
Barcelona Dades becomes an innovative portal in the field of public administrations not only due to the use of the Agile methodology, but also because it was developed with free software, which makes it easily reproducible by other public or private institutions. Additionally, it takes advantage of the capabilities of the municipal big data repository (CityOS) and its analytical capabilities.
