Several emergency protocols were activated at the El Prat airport this Tuesday morning due to the leak of a liquid in a package with low-intensity radioactive material that was in the hold of a plane, Civil Protection has confirmed.
Some people have passed a medical examination and others have been confined to the aircraft. The Medical Emergencies System has assured that “there are no people affected.” The alarm was deactivated at noon, when the Civil Protection experts confirmed that there was no contamination. In fact, the measurement has given “result 0”.
Aena sources have explained that this activation of the protocols has been carried out “preventively” without this meaning that “a risk situation” has been experienced. The airport manager calls the spill “small” and emphasizes that there is no “affect” to operations at the Barcelona airfield.
Civil Protection, Mossos d’Esquadra, the SEM and Firefighters have traveled to the scene of the events when different emergency plans were activated. However, sources familiar with what happened consider that “it is not very serious.”
Specifically, Civil Protection has received notice of “an incident in a package with low-intensity radioactive material, transported inside an aircraft.” The radioactive activities coordination service has been in charge of evaluating the situation, declaring that there is no impact. The labeling on the package indicates this low intensity.
The incident occurred on a Swiss Arilines flight. According to some sources, it transported medical machines dedicated to oncology. El Prat airport has different security protocols for these types of situations, which activate professionals from different fields.
