After being diagnosed with cancer, the King of England, Charles III, attended his first in-person audience with the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, held on Wednesday at Buckingham Palace.
After the official statement in which the British royal house revealed the illness suffered by Charles III, the monarch decided to cancel all his appearances at public events and clear his schedule of commitments. Even so, he maintained weekly private audiences with the prime minister by telephone.
At the meeting, Sunak praised Charles III’s good looks, to which the monarch responded with a smile: “It’s all a mirror trick, really.” They both joked about how long it had been since their last meeting.
“They have made me cry, I have received so many wonderful messages and cards,” Charles III assured the Prime Minister during the meeting, thus highlighting the words of encouragement and affection that British citizens have sent him since the announcement of his illness. Queen Camilla has also been thanking, through her presence at public events, the support received by the British.
Despite having returned to attend to his work commitments in person, the monarch has assured that his schedule is governed mainly by the recommendations of his doctors. Although he has now returned to Buckingham, where he intends to resume as many activities as possible and where his workplace is located, during his weeks of retirement Carlos went to the Sandringham country house.
The town, located three hours from the British capital, is home to the country house of the royal family, where its members usually rest from the media spotlight. There the monarch has carried out his treatment and subsequent recovery in addition to attending Sunday mass at the church of Santa María Magdalena every week with Queen Camilla.
Since Charles III’s cancer was announced, Prince William has taken the reins of institutional representation. The heir to the British crown, whose wife Kate Middleton is still recovering from her operation, resumed his agenda and has been seen at relevant events, such as the Bafta awards ceremony. He has also starred in a controversy when giving his opinion on the war in Gaza, distancing himself from the famous neutrality of the Windsors. In this sense, he has called for peace and the return of the Hamas hostages.
For her part, Queen Camilla has been starring in some public events on behalf of the King for a few weeks with a great reception from British citizens, who continue to wait for the speedy recovery of King Charles III.
